The method involves using the natural trail (4) sense to lead the caterpillars from the treetop on an artificial trail (3) down the trunk to the collecting container (2) attached to the tree trunk easily accessible by humans. The artificially applied trail is thicker than the natural trail and is applied in a long helix round the tree trunk. The trail can be formed by an impregnated or coated web type carrier material.
