The injector has an injection valve unit (18) linearly movable in a closing direction, and a piezoelectric actuator to move a translator piston in the direction. A gate valve sleeve (30) arranged in a nozzle body limits a nozzle space, and by which fuel with high speed and/or amount arrives into the space. The flow path of the fuel in the space is enabled by the movement of the unit (18) along the sleeve during the injection process. An independent claim is also included for a method of controlling an injection valve unit of a fuel injector.
