The computer (2) has a detecting unit for detecting the stop of an internal combustion engine, where the computer (2) is designed for cooperation with a master computer (1). The computer (2) executes a program, during an operation of the internal combustion engine. The computer (2) then executes another program during the stopping of the engine, where a time period is measured when the engine is not in operation, independent of an on-board clock present on a motor vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a device including a computer for controlling an internal combustion engine.
