The airbag unfolds itself between the seats during an accident, where a release of the airbag depends on seat occupancy which is detected using sensor mats. The release of the airbag (4) is suppressed only when neither of the two seats is occupied. The airbag is provided for front and/or rear seat rows of the vehicle.
