An inking control, especially for the ink roller in an offset press has the ink applied initially by a vibrating blade (3) to leave strips (20) of ink on the ink roller (5). The strips are smoothed into an even layer by at least one smoothing roller (5.1) driven separately with a controlled amount of drag w.r.t. the ink roller speed. The degree of drag is varied in relation to the spatial properties of the strips and in response to the print process. The smoothing rollers only contact the ink roller.
