The engine management for a motor vehicle with a transmission and a clutch in the drive train has an engine control unit including engine torque limiting as a clutch protection. The engine control unit is coupled to a vehicle network, whereby a maximum permissible engine torque is variable. The engine torque limiting is reset by the engine control unit upon a command of a diagnosis device. The command for the ending of the engine torque limiting is established on a roller test stand.
