The instrument includes a heated tip, an ambient temperature sensor, a radiation sensor, a device determining the temperature of the object under measurement and a display for the result. The infra-red thermometer is switched on. Then the ambient temperature (Ta) and the radiation temperature (Tb) are measured continuously, using the appropriate dedicated sensors. The measurement tip temperature (Ti) is raised by heating to a controlled desired value (Tw). This value is a function of both measured temperatures Ta, Tb. Temperature (Tt) of the object is only determined and displayed after the measurement tip temperature (Ti) has assumed the desired value (Tw) for a given duration.
