The method involves producing a striped pattern (2) which are projected or illustrated on surfaces which can be judged such that depressions or dents are presented as differences in height by distorted rendition of a surrounding contrast and are detected in such a way, recoded and evaluated. For the production of the striped pattern on the surfaces lighting of different intensity are used. The surface which can be judged is and/or is a motor vehicle body or parts of motor vehicle bodies. An independent claim is included for a device for the evaluation of surfaces.
