The occupant restraint system has a collision recognizing unit to recognize a collision of a motor vehicle. A vehicle seat has adjusting units to adjust the seat surface with respect to the form, position and/or cushion hardness of the seat. Belt monitoring units indicate or forecast an impact of a safety belt with a collision. A control unit has decision-making units to control the adjusting units depending upon a signal from the monitoring units. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle seat for use with the occupant restraint system.
