The circuit has a boost circuit with a switch (16) that is coupled to an input terminal for supplying an output voltage to an output terminal based on operation of the switch. A switching controller (100) generates a reference voltage based on the output voltage at a preset time when an input AC voltage is applied to the input terminal. The controller controls the switch based on the reference and AC voltage. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an output voltage in a power factor correction circuit.
