The optical sensor (1) has safety output circuit (14) which sequentially generates the test signal and on-off condition is read by the computer unit (13). The safety output circuit sends the test signal without changing the switching signal. The computer unit independently measures the signals by evaluation of signal forms at switching exit (24) which controls the safety output circuit. An independent claim is also included for the method for the functional inspection of safety output circuit.
