The method involves partially guiding fuel along a cavity bottom contour between a compression projection and a cavity edge, when the fuel impinges on a piston cavity (4) that is arranged in a piston. The fuel parts guided along a cavity bottom contour are partially separated from a cavity bottom surface or deviated by inclination change of the cavity bottom or by a convex region in the cavity bottom. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine for implementing the method for operating the internal combustion engine.
