The screw cap (1) has a base (3) as well as a cylindrical screw-member (2) which has an internal thread (6) for screwing onto an external thread (19) of a bottle neck (8). The base of the cap extends to a sealing rim (4) along a direction centerline (A). The rim has an outward arranged sealing surface (4a) which tapers in a cone shape in direction of centerline (A). The sealing surface has an angle of inclination between 2.5 degrees and 10 degrees to the centerline (A), preferably between 5 degrees and 7.5 degrees. An independent claim is included for a method for sealing a bottle with a screw cap.
