Production of a ceramic mold comprises: (a) producing/providing biomorphous carbon fibers; (b) mixing carbon fibers with binding material which can be pyrolyzed into carbon and metal-containing material; (c) forming intermediate mold from mixture by forming and cross-linking binding material; (d) pyrolyzing cross-linked binding material in intermediate mold into carbon; and (e) heating pyrolyzed intermediate mold, where the reaction of the carbon with the metal-containing material leads to formation of metal carbide of the ceramic mold. Production of a ceramic mold comprises: (a) producing or providing biomorphous carbon fibers; (b) mixing the carbon fibers with: (i) at least one binding material which can be pyrolyzed into carbon, and (ii) a metal-containing material; (c) forming an intermediate mold from the mixture by forming and cross-linking the binding material; (d) pyrolyzing the cross-linked binding material in the intermediate mold into carbon; (e) heating pyrolyzed intermediate mold, where the reaction of the carbon with the metal-containing material leads to the formation of a metal carbide of the ceramic mold; and (f) optionally removing the unreacted carbon by heating in air. An independent claim is also included for a porous mold comprising biomorphous metal carbide fibers which form a three-dimensional metal carbide network.
