The rod has a thermal-spray coating (40) disposed on a surface of a rod substrate, where the thermal-spray coating includes a composite material. The coatings are applied in thicker layers of the rod. A set of surface markings (32) is disposed on the coating at predetermined locations along the length of the cylinder rod. The composite material includes one of tungsten carbide, chrome carbide and chrome boride. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing surface markings on a cylinder rod.
