The crane, which is especially a mobile crane, has at least one cable (12) to lift a load, and at least one winch upon which the cable is wound. The cable runs between two rollers which have a freewheel in the lowering direction of the cable and which are braked by disc brakes (14) in the lifting direction of the cable. The braking force of the disc brakes is variable by means of an adjusting screw. The pressure force of the rollers on the cable is created by elements such as hydraulic cylinders or springs.
