The three sensors produce electrical outputs proportional to the amount of light falling on them. They are angled away from the centerline, so that they give different signals if the light source is off the centerline. The signals fluctuate as the assembly is rotated, and the phases and amplitudes of the fluctuations give the vector of the light source.
