Position measurement system has a probe (1) which extends along an adjusting path (V) of a motor vehicle seat (T). A receiver (2) neighbors the probe and a detector mechanism (3) having a detector (30) detects electromagnetic fields. The probe or the receiver are adjustably attached at the seat and relatively move along a detection section (10) if the seat moves along the adjusting path. The probe has varying spatial electromagnetic characteristics along the detection section which cooperates with the mechanism to generate a signal of the relative position between the probe and receiver. An independent claim is included for a motor vehicle seat with a position measuring system.
