The device has a transmission system comprising an actuator (3) and a sensor (5) and a transmission section (4) assigned to an adjusting part of a motor vehicle. The system generates and receives surface waves fed along the section. An electronic unit (2) generates a control signal for vibrational excitation of the actuator to a resonant frequency. The unit (2) evaluates the waves received by the sensor based on an attenuation produced along the section. An independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring and/or controlling a powered adjusting part of a motor vehicle`s adjusting system.
