The piston-head edge-region extends radially, almost to the inner wall of the cylinder (12). At this edge, one or more passages, throttle a leakage flow of damping fluid. This flow passes between the chambers separated by the moving piston (14) in the cylinder. It also passes through the annular recess loosely holding a deformable, resilient ring seal. Damping pressure is built up at a rate which is a function of piston velocity, direction and resilient deformation of the opening available to fluid flow.
