Portal (sic) drive for positioning a tool (5) above a machining surface (2) where the tool is applied to a portal (4) overrunning (sic) the machining surface and is driven by a direct drive for movement along a portal carrier (6), where the direct drive has at least one sliding (sic) group (9) and consists of a bearing unit with a liquid cushion, which is dynamically constructed by pressing the liquid thru nozzles in the sliding group. Independent claims are included for: (a) water jet cutting machine with a lifting table (sic); and (b) laser machining machine with a laser beam unit (5) which can be traversed over the machining surface.
