The device has a detection device activated during the detection of presence of a courier article passing above levers. A counting device (42) counts a journey time taken by a light ray to reach a light ray receiving device from a light ray emitting device. A calculation device (44) calculates the number of levers actuated by the article, using difference between the journey time and an initial time, so as to determine article width. The initial time corresponds to a journey time taken by the light ray to reach the receiving device from the emitting device in absence of passage of courier article above the levers. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for measuring at flight, the width of a courier article in a courier processing machine (2) a courier processing machine comprising a width measurement device.
