The device has a probe (1) immersed in the water (20) to sense the propagation of waves. The probe is connected to a compression chamber (8) measuring pressure variations caused by the waves. An electronic unit (4) receives and interprets electric signals representing the pressure variations and has a memory chip to store the signals generated by the wave movement. The unit alters the operating mode of the device between a calm mode, a disturbed mode and an agitated mode according to the amplitude and frequency values of the signals, and triggers an audible alarm (6). An alarm indication may also be sent over a radio link, e.g. to a receiver inside a house. An independent claim is also included for a method for the detection of a fall of a toddler or an animal into a body of water of a basin.
