PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic still camera constituted so that a camera main body can be made compact by reducing the size thereof in the optical path direction as for an electronic still camera incorporating a shutter unit. SOLUTION: The electronic still camera is provided with a photographing lens 45 guiding photographing light to the inside of the camera main body 41, an image pickup unit 73 which is arranged on the optical path of the photographing light and which incorporates a solid-state image pickup element 75 receiving the photographing light to generate an image signal and the shutter unit 57 which is arranged between the lens 45 and the element 75 and which incorporates a shutter curtain 65. Thereby, the unit 73 is arranged so that the lens 45 side thereof is made to project in the unit 57.
