The invention relates to a method for processing various kinds of dust or dust mixtures containing alkalis and heavy metals such as steel works dust, ore dusts or blast furnace dust. According to the invented process, the dust is introduced onto or into a bath consisting of liquid metals and liquid oxidic slag or below the surface of slags contained within the bath the pH value of which has been adjusted prior introduction of dust to 1 to 1.4. Volatile heavy metal compounds such as zinc and/or lead oxides are separated off from the gas phase and alkalis are introduced into slag.
