The system (1) and method are for grant of a privilege to a chip holder and has a chip (5) which contains at least one secret activatable by the chip holder and at least one related public key (19). The system also has at least one chip reader (3) coupled to a device for formation of the privilege and at least one privilege database (13) containing data defining which privilege belongs to which chip. In the system via at least one network an application route and an answer route are established between the chip reader and the privilege database. An answer from the privilege database with the aid of a chip public key comes from the key data base (11) and via the answer route is sent coded to the chip reader. With the aid of the secret key the answer is decodable by the chip holder, after which the decoded answer is transmittable to the device (1) for granting the privilege. The key should be one of at least 1024 bits.
