The lifting unit (31) is designed to firstly grip the trolley shelves at one end of the trolley so that two of the posts connected to these shelves can be removed from the trolley chassis, after which the shelves are displaced by moving the lifting forks (32) according to a first translatory movement in order to detach the posts from the shelves. The shelves are then moved over a given distance by the forks according to a second translatory movement in the opposite direction to the first, and then finally the shelves are moved under the influence of gravity according to a third translatory movement in the same direction as the second, until they are in contact with each other with the bottom shelf resting on top of the chassis and the shelves still connected to the other two posts at the other end of the trolley. The device also includes guides (34), a support, a clamp (35) and a frame.
