The invention relates to an elevator with a car (10) which moves along at least one guiderail in a hoistway (11). The car (10) is supported by at least one suspension rope (14) which is driven by a drive unit (19). The drive unit (19) has a drive motor (21) and driven by this a rope pulley (20) over which the suspension rope (14) passes. The drive unit (19) is located in an upper section of the hoistway (11) and projects over at least part of the car (10). To assure safe access to the drive unit when the dimensions of the hoistway (11) are efficiently utilized, according to the invention an elevator is proposed in which the car (10) has a closable opening in the roof (24) through which the drive unit (19) is accessible.
