The device comprises two components; a depth limiter and amechanical compression apparatus. The depth limiter determines the depth ofchest compression and helps to identify the anatomical land mark. Thecompression apparatus has a base with a vertical pole mounted on one end. Alateral arm extends horizontally from the vertical pole; this arm can slidealongthe pole and is controlled by a quick-release mechanism. The lateral arm isconnected to a movable compression arm by a hinge, which restricts the motionrange of the compression arm to the preset baseline. To operate this device,placethe apparatus base under the patient's chest, slide the lateral arm down untilthecompression arm touches the patient's chest wall, and position the depthlimiter.Engage the compression arm onto the depth limiter notch. Press the handle toexert compression. This portable device is useful for performing externalcardiaccompression.
