An inter- engaging fastener system (6) comprises a first substrate (7) provided with a plurality of spaced first engagement members (8) distributed across a surface of the first substrate, and a second substrate (9) provided with a plurality of second engagement members (10) disposed across a surface of the second substrate. Each first member comprises a central projection (11) and a wall surface (12) spaced from, surrounding and facing the projection. The wall surface defines, together with the surface of the projection, a generally ring-shaped groove (13) between the wall surface and the projection surface, Each second member is of generally cylindrical form, defining a central socket (15) surrounded by a circum- extending wall (16) having an inner surface (17) defining the socket and an outer surface (18) . The first' member forms a close fit with the second member. The system may be used to interengage an upper portion (2) and a sole portion of an item' of footwear.
