A method for estimating an expression from feature values extracted from face images by using an expression image database on a subject such as an infant having a difficulty in emotion expression is proposed. The output value with respect to a face region from a Gabor filter is used as the feature value and inputted to an identifier to output the name of the expression. By as a database using only face images on the subject such as an infant, the expression of the subject can be recognized without using any action unit.
