Provided is a method for preparing an electrode catalyst, which allows platinum particles having a small size and low oxidization degree to be supported on a carbon carrier with high dispersibility, and to provide an electrode catalyst for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell and direct methanol fuel cell with high activity. The method for preparing an electrode catalyst comprises the steps of: mixing a carbon carrier, a reducing agent for a platinum precursor and water to provide an aqueous reducing agent solution in which the carbon carrier is dispersed; in a separate container, dissolving a platinum precursor into water to provide an aqueous platinum precursor solution; adding the aqueous Pt precursor solution gradually into the reducing agent solution while agitating the reducing agent solution to perform a reaction; and allowing the reaction mixture to precipitate, and washing and drying the resultant product.
