An image forming apparatus for managing an ink ribbon error history and a ribbon error history managing method thereof are provided to store the ink ribbon error history when an ink ribbon error occurs and to perform the printing operation after checking whether a ribbon cartridge is replaced. A method of managing an ink ribbon error history of an image forming apparatus includes the steps of displaying a ribbon cartridge replacement request message when an ink ribbon error is generated during the printing operation(S310), determining whether a ribbon cartridge is replaced(S315), and storing the ink ribbon error history when the ribbon cartridge is not replaced(S355). The method further includes the step of performing the printing operation again when the ribbon cartridge is replaced(S335). The image forming apparatus includes a storing unit to store the ink ribbon error history, and a controlling unit to control to display the ribbon cartridge replacement request message when the ink ribbon error is generated during the printing operation and to store the ink ribbon error history in the storing unit when the ribbon cartridge is not replaced.
