Process for production of nanocrystallite-containing metal oxide metal oxide layers on sealing layer forming metals, especially for production of Ti oxide layers, where substrate is cleaned and degreased anodically, exposed to aqueous electrolyte containing complexing agents, preferably chelate formers, metal oxides or derivatives of these, an alcohol, preferably secondary or tertiary alcohol at a concentration greater than 0.01 mole/liter. An anodization process takes place in the electrolyte with spark discharge with equal voltage pulses and periodic change of the voltage up to the coating voltage. The coated substrate is cleaned, rinsed free from electrolyte and dried. To the electrolyte is added at least one further metal oxide and/or mixed metal oxide component, e.g. gadolinium (III)-acetyl acetonate hydrate and/or Cer(III)-acetyl acetonate hydrate at a concentration of 0.01 mole/liter.
