The device (1) has a time-control unit (33) for testing of time-critical parameters and a protocol control unit (37) for testing of protocol parameters of a communication system of a vehicle. The device communicates with the vehicle over a diagnostic interface such as controller area network (CAN) bus and data interface, of a communication system by a communication unit, assembler unit and assembler receiving unit. The device preprograms answers to questions of a scan tool, and stores in a protocol unit (25). An independent claim is also included for a method for implementing an on-board diagnosis communication test for a vehicle with a diagnostic device.
