A detected element (6) with edges is fixed to the drive train (3) and monitored by a sensor (1) which detects passage of edges. A second detected element (7) with edges is also fixed to the drive train, axially spaced apart from the first detected element. Passage of its edges are monitored by a second sensor (2). The two sensors are connected to a microcomputer (8) which records the variation with time of the edge signals from the sensors and determines the rotation speed. The transmitted torque is then calculated from the time offset between the edge signals.
