A paper mill has a rotating suction drum in contact with a moving web of wet paper (4) supported by an air-permeable belt (3). The suction drum is partly enclosed within a suction box (2) and bears an array of detents that are transverse grooves (8) set at an angle to the axis of drum rotation.
