Reducing composition for permanent styling or straightening of hair comprises an aqueous medium, a keratin-reducing agent, ammonia and at least 10 wt.% of a mesomorphous phase. Independent claims are also included for: (1) production of the reducing composition by adding a reducing agent and ammonia to a mesomorphous phase prepared by mixing a nonionic surfactant (having a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of up to 10) with water and optionally a fatty alcohol; (2) permanent styling or straightening of hair by applying the reducing composition to mechanically tensioned or manually styled hair, optionally rinsing the hair, applying an oxidizing composition and rinsing the hair; (3) multi-compartment kit comprising the reducing composition in one compartment.
