An input quantity and an output quantity of a component group are determined, and the correlation value between the quantities is calculated in a correlation calculator. The quantities are measured during a common time period, during which the correcting variable is modulated, and are filtered before feeding into the correlation calculator. Correlation reference quantity and/or threshold value depend upon operational parameters of a drive train containing the component group.
