PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool in which a hard coating layer shows an excellent chipping resistance in heavy cutting of a difficult-to-cut material.;SOLUTION: The surface-coated cutting tool is configured by forming the hard coating layer on the surface of the base body of the tool, the hard coating layer which is composed of, (a) a lower layer which has a mean layer thickness of 1 to 5 μm and is composed of a composite nitride layer of Cr and Y satisfying the following composition formula: (Cr1-XYX)N, where X satisfies 0.001≤X≤0.1 in an atomic ratio, (b) an intermediate layer composed of a vanadium nitride layer having a mean layer thickness of 0.4 to 2 μm, and (c) the upper layer composed of a vanadium oxide layer having a mean layer thickness of 0.4 to 2 μm.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
