PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve strength even without increasing material quantity etc., and to effectively absorb a colliding energy with a simple structure.;SOLUTION: An extendable front frame 11 formed to have a closed cross sectional shape is subjected to nitriding treatment and is provided with, in the vicinity of its end part at a car compartment side, a quenched part 31 subjected to quenching treatment at 500-700°C. The basic strength of the front frame 11 is thereby improved based on the nitriding treatment. Further, at the same time, the quenched part 31 is highly hardened ( made brittle ) with the quenching treatment and at the initial stage in the collision, the quenched part 31 is made to hardly buckle, and on the other hand, after the initial stage in the collision, based on a lowering in the ductility of the quenched part 31, the front frame 11 is deformed with bending by causing the the quenched part 31 to induce buckling.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
