The present invention provides a novel photosensitizer, a method for cleaving a protein and a sugar molecule by light irradiation, a protein cleaving agent and a sugar molecule cleaving agent used therefor, and a photodynamic therapeutic agent. A compound represented by the following general formula (I) or a salt thereof has an action of generating active oxygen upon irradiation with light and cleaving proteins and sugar molecules. It is useful as a cleaving agent, a sugar molecule cleaving agent, and a photodynamic therapeutic agent. (Wherein R1 to R8 are a hydrogen atom or a substituent having a hydroxyl group, and at least one of R1 to R8 is a substituent having a hydroxyl group.)
