Methods and Compositions Involving A1c Subunit of L-Type Calcium Channels in Smooth Muscle Cells

The present invention concerns methods and composition for modulating the level of gene expression of the α_1C subunit of the L-type calcium channel. Such methods and compositions provide preventative and therapeutic benefits with respect to gastrointestinal motility disorders. In examples of the invention, sustained changes in gene expression of the α_1C subunit are effected by a low dose of a modulator given over an extended period of time. This provides methods and compositions for inducing sustained contractility or relaxation of gut smooth muscle cells.
