AN ECO-FRIENDLY PROCESS OF DYEING TEXTILE MATERIAL WITH THE EXTRACT OF OCIMUM SANCTUM LEAVES

An eco-friendly process of dyeing with the dye extracted from Bixa orellana Linn. seeds in which natural colorants are extracted with organic solvent. The colorants from powdered Bixa orellana Linn. seeds are extracted with acetone at a ratio ranging from 1:30 to 1:100 at boiling temperature in soxhlet apparatus. Textile material of natural origin like cotton, silk and wool are dyed with this dye. Textile material mordanted with eco-friendly mordants and dyed with this dye produce orange colour on the material. In this process tannic acid and alum are used as mordant. Mordanted textiles are dyed with this dye in jigger at a material to liquor ratio of 1:15 to 2:90 at 50ºC to 80ºC for 30 to 90 minutes. However, for dyeing with cold-pad-batch process requires 1:20 material to liquor ratio at ambient temperature and 24 hours batching time. Textiles dyed with this dye are having good fastness properties as well as bacteriostatic activity on textile material. Due to uniformity in dyeing, good fastness properties and antimicrobial activity of the Bixa orellana Linn. dye, it can be used at commercial level.
