The invention relates to a non-conventional energy based underground storage device for moderating cold conditions at high altitude for preservation of fresh vegetables, the device comprising: a pit having a length (L), a breath (B), and a height (H) arranged below the ground level (1), the pit having masanory side walls (8) projected upwardly from an earthen base (10) of the pit forming thereby a top-open covered space, a door (4) having a height (h3) acting as one of the side walls (8) and additionally serving as an ingress and egress facility for the covered space; a roof structure (9) disposed above the side walls (8), the roof structure (9) being provided at a gap (hi) below the ground level (1), a plurality of bailies (6) disposed on the earthen base (10), fresh vegetables filled in bags being stored columns and rows thereupon having gaps therebetween; the bags containing fresh vegetables being arranged in the storage device maintaining a gap (h2) from the roof structure (9), the inside temperature moderation being achieved by the absorption of solar radiation during the day and the emission at the night by the earthen floor (10), the device features being configured to establish the following relationships: (i).
