The present invention relates to a combined compression and shearing process for obtaining foamed articles with open cells having a soft grip, low compression strength and excellent compression set results. In the process at least two consecutive pairs of rolls are used to exert a combined compression and shearing on a starting polyolefin foam wherein the circumferential speeds of the rolls in at least two subsequent pairs of rolls are such that the rolls having a higher circumferential speed with respect to the other roll in each pair of rolls are located on different sides of the foam web.
