An automobile has a passenger compartment whose side-impact strength is enhanced by one or more transverse tubes (2) extending side-to-side. The tube bears a conical extension (3) at each end and in the normal condition is separated by a gap from the vehicle body (5). On side-impact the conical extension makes contact with the body wall interior. The gap between the transverse tube end and the conical end-face is closed by an annular ring.
