Preparation of oxidic coating material based on refractive metals comprises providing oxide powder or a compacted tablet-like blank of the refractive metal oxide from the oxide powder, providing the powder or the blanks into a vacuum arc furnace with stationary tungsten electrode, and melting the powder or the blank in the vacuum arc furnace under inert gas atmosphere to a fusion body.
