The back rest has a upholstery and a back plate (5). The back plate has a base plate (10) and a side part (11). The side part is connected firmly, particularly welded, with the base plate at a side. A side of the side part connected with the base plate adjusts the side of the side part opposite to a contour of a wheel arc or chassis of the vehicle, whereby the width of the side part varies around 20 percent in transverse direction of the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for the manufacturing of a backrest.
