The method involves making a shadowed region (4) visible through a surface of a tooth preparation (1) in an observation axis (5) of the tooth preparation and adapting an insertion axial direction to the observation axis. The shadowed region is marked through corresponding regions (10, 11) on the surface of the tooth preparation and/or restoration, where the marking of the regions (10, 11) changes with quality and/or quantity of the region (4). The observation axis is interactively changeable, and superimposed portions of the surface are marked.
